This Roasted Broccoli & Hummus dish is packed with flavor from the charred broccoli and za’atar spice, plus crunchy roasted nuts and zesty lemon juice.

Broccoli & Hummus

I’m always looking for a different side dish to serve alongside chicken or pork for dinner and this hummus and broccoli fits the bill perfectly. If you’re looking for an alternative to serving plain broccoli or another simple salad, you have to try this recipe.

Hummus makes such a great snack, but there’s always quite a bit leftover. Now I use it for this side dish, rather than eventually tossing it or freezing it. You can portion it into a side or serve it as an appetizer or first course. I’ve even eaten this dish as a main a time or two. The tenderstem broccoli makes it feel quite substantial.

»Try making your own hummus at home. It’s super easy to make and then you can adjust the size of the recipe to what you’re using it for.

Did you know that broccoli goes really well with hummus. The two flavors are very complimentary, and even more so when the broccoli is charred. I love the sweetness of roasted broccoli mixed with the creamy hummus. And za’atar is one of my favorite spices. If you’ve never tried it, I encourage you to get some for this recipe. You might just fall in love with it like I did. Of course you can substitute it with paprika if you don’t want to use it, but it’s not as flavorful that way.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Broccoli – I like to use tenderstem broccoli – also called broccolini.

Olive oil – Always use a good quality olive oil, a low-quality or flavorless olive oil won’t add character and flavor.

Hummus – We like to use this homemade hummus recipe but your favorite store-bought version will work.

Slivered almonds – Adds a nice crunch to the dish.

Za’atar seasoning – A spice mixture from the Middle East consisting of oregano, thyme, marjoram, sumac and toasted sesame seeds.  One of my favorite spices. If you’ve never tried it, I encourage you to get some for this recipe.

Additional seasoning – Paprika, salt and pepper.

Lemon wedges – Always use fresh lemon.

How to Make Roasted Broccoli & Hummus

Putting this dish together is simple. Start by roasting the broccoli in the oven. I like to use tenderstem broccoli – also called broccolini. You can use broccoli florets, if you want. It’ll taste the same in the end. I just think the presentation is better with the tenderstem. Crank the oven temp up to 425 degrees F to get nice charred florets.

You can use roasted cauliflower for this recipe too! Meanwhile, add some hummus to the plate. When the broccoli is done, add it to the top of the hummus. Finally, sprinkle with za’atar and top with slivered almonds or other seeds and nuts, a sprinkle of paprika and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does hummus taste like?

Hummus has a rich and savory umami flavor thanks to the garlic and cumin along with a tangy and bright bite from the lemon juice. It has a smooth and creamy texture and pairs well with pita bread or vegetables. It can be used as a dip but also goes well in things like sandwiches, deviled eggs or with a salad.

What is Za’atar seasoning?

It is a spice mixture from the Middle East consisting of oregano, thyme, marjoram, cumin, coriander, sumac and toasted sesame seeds.  The spice blend differs in different areas of the Middle east.

Are broccoli and broccolini the same thing?

No. Broccolini is a hybrid of broccoli. While they look very similar broccolini is much smaller and more delicate. Broccolini is also slightly sweeter.

How to Serve Roasted Broccoli & Hummus

I serve this side dish with this air fryer whole chicken or marinated grilled chicken thighs, bacon-wrapped pork chops, or even on its own as a main dish. If you’re looking for something to serve this with, try one of these recipes:
