This Homemade Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing is creamy and perfectly for dressing any salad with delicious blue cheese flavor.

Homemade Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing

It can be difficult to find a really good, thick and creamy pre-made blue cheese dressing. Once I learned to make it at home, I never bought it pre-made again, because making it at home allows you to adjust the taste to fit your preferences.

You’ll be surprised how easy it is to make blue cheese dressing. It takes less than five minutes to whip it up. That means you can have freshly made dressing whenever you want.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Blue cheese – You should be able to find blue cheese in the specialty cheese section of the grocery store. You can use gorgonzola for a more mild flavor. I use Rogue Creamery Blue Cheese from Oregon. It’s my favorite blue cheese. It’s not too pungent and it’s not too “blue”, so the dressing turns out white rather than some weird shade of green or blue.
  • Mayonnaise – Use whichever brand you’d like or use homemade.
  • Buttermilk – Helps with thickness and flavor.
  • Sour cream – Gives the dressing its creamy consistency.
  • White wine vinegar – You can also use regular white vinegar or rice vinegar for a more mild flavor.
  • Sugar
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt & ground black pepper – To taste.

Helpful Tips

  • The most important part of this dressing is the blue cheese. It’s super important to find a blue cheese that you personally really like. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dry crumbly blue cheese, or a creamier variety. – they both work for this recipe.
  • Buttermilk is also an important ingredient for this dressing. Buttermilk adds a thickness with a little bit of acidity that brightens up the rich cheese. If you don’t have buttermilk, you can substitute it with heavy cream and a splash of lemon juice or just add more sour cream instead.
  • When you start to incorporate the blue cheese into the mix, it helps to smash some of the cheese crumbles with the back of a spoon, so they break down and can be stirred into the dressing.
  • I do like to keep a few chunks of blue cheese in the dressing, but at least half of it should be smashed and stirred in.

What to Serve With Blue Cheese Dressing

My favorite salad to put this homemade blue cheese dressing on is a Classic Wedge Salad. There’s something magical about blue cheese, bacon, avocado and tomatoes. It’s one of my favorite salads.

We also use blue cheese dressing on our Cobb Pasta Salad. It also makes a great dip for veggies and for chicken wings. So many uses! You’ll soon be making a batch of this dressing every week!

Don’t worry if you have left over dressing. It keeps well in the refrigerator for up to a week.
