Looking for a cute Christmas appetizer to serve? These Puff Pastry Christmas Tree Appetizers are an easy and quick way to decorate the party table, and they’re delicious too!

These bite-sized trees will bring a touch of holiday magic to your table. They are easy to prepare and even easier for your guests to grab and eat. I love serving these puff pastry appetizers for holiday parties and they will be gone in minutes.
Why You’ll Love It
- Easy to Make: With just a few ingredients and some folding, you’ve got yourself a holiday showstopper.
- Visually Striking: The tree shape coupled with the cheese star on top makes this a visual delight.
- Taste Meets Art: The blend of flaky puff pastry and savory pesto creates a rich and flavorful bite.

Ingredients You’ll Need

- Puff pastry – Just one sheet is enough to make more than a dozen trees.
- Pesto sauce – You can use homemade pesto or store-bought pesto for an even easier treat.
- Parmesan cheese – I recommend using freshly grated parmesan cheese if possible, it will melt better and taste better than the prepackaged stuff.
- Slice of cheese of your choice for the stars – I started out using white cheddar slices but switched to cutting a slice from yellow cheddar, which I liked better.
Equipment You’ll Need
- Baking sheet – You either need a large sheet or you’ll have to cook these in 2 batches.
- Parchment paper – This makes for easier cleanup. Place it on the baking sheet to keep the trees from sticking.
- Pizza wheel or sharp knife – The easiest way to cut the puff pastry into strips is with a pizza wheel.
- Small star-shaped cookie cutter – You can often find a small star in a Christmas cookie pack. We used this one.
- Skewers – 8″ wooden skewers work best; be sure to get them wet or soak them before using.

Expert Tips for Preparing the Dish
- Using the puff pastry when it’s still partially frozen is best because it holds shape well. If the pastry is too warm, it will be difficult to cut and to fold. If you’re finding it difficult, put the pastry in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes.
- Use a spatula to evenly spread the pesto sauce across the pastry, avoiding any pooling.
- We found that 4 back-and-forth folds was the best number of folds to make in your puff pastry. The folds can be slightly packed together too. They will expand when they cook.
- Let the trees cool slightly before adding the cheese star; you don’t want it to melt into a gooey blob.
