Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry
  • 1/4 cup basil pesto
  • 2 tablespoon Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 slice white cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Roll out the puff pastry sheet and spread the pesto evenly onto the sheet.
  • Using a pizza wheel, slice through the pastry along the shortest side to make 1” strips.
  • Fold the strips back and forth to make a tree shape. Slide a skewer through the center of the pastry to hold it together.
  • Place the skewers on the baking sheet and bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes, until puffed and slightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven.
  • While the trees are cooling, cut star shapes out of the slice of cheese with a small star cookie cutter. Place the stars on the skewer at the top of the tree.

Notes

  • Using the puff pastry when it's still partially frozen is best because it holds shape well. If the pastry is too warm, it will be difficult to cut and to fold. If you're finding it difficult, put the pastry in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes.
  • Use a spatula to evenly spread the pesto sauce across the pastry, avoiding any pooling.
  • We found that 4 back-and-forth folds was the best number of folds to make in your puff pastry. The folds can be slightly packed together too. They will expand when they cook.
  • Let the trees cool slightly before adding the cheese star; you don’t want it to melt into a gooey blob.
