Cinnamon Rolls with Heavy Cream

You’re probably wondering what makes these cinnamon rolls so much better than regular cinnamon rolls. It’s the heavy cream – it makes the buns light, fluffy, and moist. They’re so good that no one will guess they weren’t made from scratch.

These cinnamon rolls are simple to make and only take a few minutes. Pouring on the cream works some sort of magic and makes the buns rise more than usual. They expand and fluff up like homemade yeast rolls do.

What Are Tik Tok Cinnamon Rolls?

Even if you’re not a Tik Tok user yourself, you’ve likely heard about a few of the viral Tik Tok trends that spread like wildfire. This is one of those trends that everyone was trying when it got posted. Though I don’t know who the original poster was, it’s been remade many times by others.

I’m always hesitant to try a TikTok recipe in case it doesn’t work out, but I’m so pleased I tried this one. If you can get away with using store-bought rolls and get a result like this, I’ll take it!

Prepping and making homemade cinnamon rolls is a chore, but store bought rolls never turn out as good. Until now. You will get near homemade quality rolls in a fraction of the time. These are quite similar to Cinnabon, especially if you use Grands! Cinnamon Rolls.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Cinnamon Rolls with Heavy Cream
  • Store Bought Cinnamon Rolls – Any brand or size you like.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream – This is the key ingredient that will make the rolls extra fluffy and soft. Don’t use half and half. It won’t work the same way.
  • Salted Butter – In this recipe I used salted butter, but you could use unsalted if that’s what you have available.
  • Ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg – Store-bought cinnamon rolls already have some cinnamon in them, but never enough, in my opinion.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting – This is included in the can of cinnamon rolls.

Helpful Tips

  • Allow the cinnamon rolls to cool slightly before frosting them. If not, the frosting will melt and glaze the cinnamon buns instead of remaining on top.
  • The great part about this recipe is that you can adjust the bits to your liking. You can add more butter and brown sugar, or leave it off entirely. If you like more cinnamon, feel free to sprinkle on more.
  • You can easily expand this recipe as needed, which I sometimes do. Grands! rolls come in a package of 5, so you could make a small or large batch.

What Cinnamon Rolls to Use

cinnamon rolls

I’ve used many different brands and sizes of cinnamon rolls with this recipe. They all work, so use any brand that is your favorite. The viral Tik Tok cinnamon rolls are Grands! Cinnamon Rolls.

For smaller buns, go with regular Pillsbury cinnamon rolls. They come in a pack of 8 small rolls.

For giant fluffy ones, like Cinnabon, buy Grands Cinnamon Rolls. They come in a pack of 5 large rolls.

Just make sure to adjust the cooking times depending on which kind/size you buy. It will vary between about 15 minutes and 30 minutes. A huge difference! When making different sized cinnamon rolls with heavy cream, you will have to adjust the cooking time for the specific size you have.

How to Make Cinnamon Rolls With Heavy Cream

Step 1: Prepare the oven/pan

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a baking pan or line it with parchment paper. The size of your pan will vary based on which type of rolls you bought. If you’re using regular sized rolls, a smaller 8″x12″ will work. For Grands! Cinnamon Rolls, you’ll need a 9×13″ pan.

Step 2: Prepare the cinnamon rolls

Open the cinnamon rolls and place them into the baking pan. Spread them out so they have plenty of room to expand. Trust me, they expand A LOT.

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter, then add the brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Whisk it all together and simmer just until slightly caramelized, about 3 minutes. You can skip this step if you don’t have time, but the extra caramelization adds a lot of great flavor.

Pour the heavy cream evenly over the top of the cinnamon rolls, then pour on the butter mixture.

Step 3: Bake

Bake the cinnamon rolls according to the directions on the package. For regular sized rolls, it takes about 15-17 minutes. For Grands rolls, it takes about 22-25 minutes. You’ll want to check the bottom of a roll to determine if it’s cooked through. Put them back in for a few minutes, if they are still gummy on the bottom.

Let the rolls cool for a minute or two, then spread the cream cheese frosting over the top of the rolls and serve them hot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I store these cinnamon rolls?

Although it’s preferable to eat them while they’re fresh, they can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days if they are sealed in an airtight container. Simply place them in the microwave for a few seconds to reheat. Make sure not to microwave them for long though because they can become soggy.

Can I make my own cinnamon rolls instead of using canned?

Yes, you can make your own cinnamon rolls from scratch and then follow this recipe to add the heavy cream. I find that homemade cinnamon rolls are already super light and fluffy on their own and don’t necessarily need the cream to enhance them, however.

Can I make these ahead of time?

It’s not really necessary to make these ahead of time because there isn’t a difficult or time consuming process. All you have to do is open the can of cinnamon rolls, pour over the heavy cream, and bake. However, if you did want to make them ahead, you can bake them, then cool them. Wrap with plastic wrap until you want to serve them. They can be heated slightly in the microwave or returned to the oven for a few minutes to heat them up.

Skipped the butter melting step and just did it in the microwave. I used Grands rolls. They were really good. Not sure any of us need all these extra calories, but hey.

  2. AnnikaB says:

Pretty hard to mess up thus recipe as it’s all basic and straightforward, so it was un unpleasant surprise when I tried it out and had no cream absorbed into the buns. They were swimming in the cream in the bottom of the baking dish.

I’m sorry you had a bad outcome. That has not been our experience. The rolls usually soak up the majority of the cream leaving a creamy sauce in the bottom of the dish.

Yum. I was worried about the cream getting soaked up after another commenter said hers didn’t, but mine worked perfect. The rolls puffed up a ton and the cream made this wonderful caramel sauce.
