This Aperol Spritz is made in a batch using Aperol, Prosecco, and soda water, and it’s served on tap in a uKeg. This is the perfect way to serve cold cocktails while at a party or even hanging out on the beach.

aperol sprits and a ukeg

There’s something undeniably captivating about sipping an Aperol Spritz as the sun dips below the horizon. That’s what makes this iconic Italian cocktail, with its vibrant orange hue and bubbly personality, perfect for a party. And we’ve found the best way to serve it in a batch, kept cold for up and retaining its signature fizz for up to 8 hours.

If you haven’t heard of a uKeg, it’s a growler made by PerfectWerks (formerly GrowlerWerks) that can be used to serve beer, cocktails, or even nitro cold brew. It has it’s own integrated carbonation system, so it’s almost like having a keg on hand at all times. You can get one here and save 15% at checkout with our code: FLK15

We’ve used it for so many things already, but this Aperol Spritz is one of our favorites that we’ll go back to again and again. All you need are the cocktail ingredients and a CO2 cannister (which you can buy with the uKeg).

Why You’ll Love It

  • Effortlessly Refreshing: The combination of Prosecco, Aperol, and soda water creates a light and refreshing cocktail that’s perfect for sipping on a warm day.
  • Striking Appearance: Its bright orange color makes the Aperol Spritz a visually stunning addition to any table setting or social media feed.
  • Versatile: Ideal for aperitivo hour, brunch, or any celebration, and it can fit up to 64 ounces, which is approximately 12 cocktails.

Ingredients You Need

ingredients
  • Prosecco – Prosecco is the traditional choice for an authentic Aperol Spritz. It’s usually a bit on the sweeter side, which pairs well with the bitter Aperol. You can substitute it with cava, champagne or another type of sparkling wine.
  • Aperol – Can be switched for its cousin Campari for a less sweet cocktail that’s also higher in alcohol
  • Soda water – Can be substituted for any type of unflavored sparkling water, though I don’t recommend a sweetened water which might make the cocktail too sweet.
  • Ice cubes – The cocktail will stay cold for up to 8 hours in the uKeg, but it’s still best served over ice.
  • Orange slice – for garnish

Equipment Needed

  • PerfectWerks uKeg Pro – I have the uKeg Pro 64-ounce version. I really like it. You don’t necessarily need a uKeg to make the recipe though. Any carbonated keg will work.
  • CO2 cannister – You’ll need a cannister (also called a charger) that you put into the lid of the uKeg to carbonate the cocktail.

Helpful Tips

  • Make sure you have a CO2 cannister on hand. They aren’t expensive (about $1 each). You can serve the full keg of cocktails using one cannister.
  • Opt for a dry Prosecco to balance the sweetness of the Aperol. The bubbles add a delightful texture and help to meld the flavors beautifully.
  • You can adjust the recipe based on how many cocktails you wish to serve. Our recipe below makes about nine 5-ounce cocktails or eight 6-ounce cocktails.

How to Make an Aperol Spritz

Step 1: Pre-chill

Pre-chill the ingredients. This ensures your cocktail will stay cold in the keg. If you’re not planning to take the cocktails out of the house, you can store the uKeg in the refrigerator to keep them cold. If you’re taking it with you, be sure to pre-chill all 3 ingredients.

Step 2: Fill the uKeg

filling the ukeg

Pour the Prosecco carefully into the uKeg. I pour it slowly down the side so it doesn’t lose too much of its fizz. Pour in the Aperol and the soda water. Gently swirl the growler to mix the contents.

Step 3: Cap it and serve

Insert a fresh CO2 canister into the cartridge sleeve. Tighten the cap on the uKeg. Turn the pressure dial halfway up. You’ll see the pressure build. We like to serve ours at about 12psi.

Fill your glass with ice. Pour your cocktail. Garnish with an orange slice.

The History of the Cocktail

The Aperol Spritz has its roots in the Veneto region of Italy, where it evolved from the traditional spritz Veneziano. Aperol, introduced in 1919, quickly became a beloved ingredient for its vibrant color and unique flavor, derived from bitter oranges, gentian, rhubarb, and cinchona. By the 1950s, the Aperol Spritz as we know it today began to gain popularity, embodying the Italian aperitivo culture of enjoying a light, pre-meal drink to stimulate the appetite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make an Aperol Spritz without Prosecco?

While Prosecco is traditional, you can substitute it with another dry sparkling wine if necessary. The key is to maintain the bubbly and dry characteristics that balance the Aperol.

Is there a non-alcoholic version of this cocktail?

Yes, you can create a non-alcoholic version by substituting Prosecco with a sparkling grape juice or a non-alcoholic sparkling wine, and using a non-alcoholic aperitif in place of Aperol.

How can I adjust the Aperol Spritz to my taste?

The beauty of the Aperol Spritz lies in its simplicity and adaptability. Feel free to adjust the ratios to suit your taste preferences. If you prefer it less sweet, reduce the amount of Aperol. For a less alcoholic version, increase the soda water.
