One of the easiest and best ways to make BBQ baked chicken wings is in the oven. These foolproof chicken wings are tender and delicious with plenty of BBQ sauce to jazz them up.
When I’m craving comfort food, my go-to is these BBQ chicken wings. They are so easy to make that they’re a no-brainer for an appetizer or casual dinner. Slather a little of my favorite homemade bourbon BBQ sauce on them and you’ll see why they’re so addictive.
For a party, we like to serve these along with Easy Jerk Chicken Wings and crispy Korean chicken wings to give different flavors for guests to enjoy.

Why You’ll Love It
- Less Fat, Less Mess: Baking chicken wings leads to just as tender and crispy a wing, with a lot less fat than deep frying. It’s an easy way to make great chicken wings.
- Crispy Skin: The wings will get nice and crispy in the oven!
- Great for Dipping: I like to smother my wings in bbq sauce, but they also go really well with a blue cheese dressing, ranch dressing, or this Alabama white BBQ sauce.

Ingredients You’ll Need
You can mix up a batch of this rub to have on hand. It is wonderful on all kinds of things.
- Dry rub ingredients – Paprika, brown sugar, black pepper, salt, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and mustard powder.
- Chicken wings – 1 pound of wings cut at the joint.
- BBQ sauce – I use this homemade smoky bourbon BBQ sauce but you could use your favorite sauce.
Helpful Tips
- Chicken is considered fully cooked and safe to eat when the internal temperature reaches 165° F (73.8° C).
- Coating the wings in dry rub gives them a ton of extra flavor and will help to absorb the moisture on the wings, leading a crispier exterior.
- Laying the chicken wings on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper or tin foil for easy clean-up.
How to Make BBQ Baked Chicken Wings
Step 1: Mix the rub
The first step to making these baked BBQ chicken wings is to put together a basic rub for the wings. Coating the wings in this homemade dry rub gives them a ton of extra flavor and will help to absorb the moisture on the wings, leading a crispier exterior.
For the rub, I combine chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mix it all together.
Step 2: Season the ribs
Season the ribs well with the dry rub. Make sure to get both sides and don’t be afraid to use a lot. It’s just more great flavor.
Lay them out evenly on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper or tin foil. If you use tin foil, rub on a thin layer of oil or spray with non-stick cooking spray to keep the ribs from sticking.
Step 3: Bake
Bake the wings for 15 minutes at 400° F (204° C). Flip them over and bake for another 15 minutes on the other side.
Step 4: Baste
Take the tray from the oven and baste them with BBQ sauce. I like to use this homemade bourbon bbq sauce, but you can use our favorite bbq sauce. Brush the sauce onto the top side of the wings.
Step 5: Broil
Turn your oven to broil, with the top rack lowered to the 2nd row. This will help keep the splatter and flare ups to a minimum. You’ll want to keep a close eye on the wings as they broil.
They only need about 3 minutes per side. Once one side begins to crackle and pop, remove the tray, turn the wings over, and slather the sauce on the other side of the wings. Broil again.
Step 6: Serve
Once the wings have gotten a light char on each side, remove them from the oven and serve.
These baked BBQ wings are great for parties, picnics, or even backyard barbecues. They turn out perfect every time, and the sauce makes them irresistible finger food!
Other Ways to Cook Wings
Air Fryer
I will admit that the air fryer is another really great way to make chicken wings, and you can even cook them frozen straight out of the freezer. If you’ve never used an air fryer before, you should give it a try. It’s amazing how crispy food gets, without all the grease.
To cook them, just place them in the air fryer basket on 400 degrees F for 25 minutes, shaking the basket a few times during cooking. If you want to baste them with BBQ sauce, do so after the 20-minute mark.
Grill
Begin by preheating your grill to a medium-high heat, around 375°F to 400°F (190°C to 204°C). For gas grills, set one burner to medium-high and another burner to a lower setting to achieve the same effect.
- Place the wings on the cooler part of the grill first. This indirect heat will cook them through without burning the skin.
- Close the lid and let them cook for about 15-20 minutes, turning them occasionally for even cooking.
- Once they’re mostly cooked through, move the wings to the direct heat side of the grill to crisp up the skin. This will take about 5-10 minutes. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning, flipping them frequently.

How to Reheat BBQ Chicken Wings
There are quite a few ways to go about reheating chicken wings if you happen to find yourself with some leftovers, but one method really stands out from the rest. We really believe that the best way to reheat chicken wings is with the air fryer.
- Preheat the air fryer to 365°F (185°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Brush or spray the air fryer basket with oil.
- Place the chicken wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd them.
- Cook for about 8-10 minutes, flipping the wings halfway through.

- 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon (3 g) salt
- 1/2 teaspoon (1 g) chili powder

Instructions
- Pre-heat the oven to 400° F (204° C).
- Mix all the dry rub ingredients in a small bowl.

- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and turn it to broil. Place the top rack on the 2nd row, so it's not too close to the heating element.
- Brush the tops of the wings with BBQ sauce and broil the wings for 3-5 minutes, until a bit of char begins to form. Remove the sheet, flip the wings over, brush the sauce on the tops. Broil again for 3-5 minutes.
- Remove the wings from the oven and serve.
Notes
- You can use our Bourbon BBQ Sauce recipe, or any other BBQ sauce you prefer. It doesn’t have to be homemade. We love Sweet Baby Ray’s bottled sauce.
- For the rub, you can use any purchased rub you like, or use the rub in this recipe. You can leave out the brown sugar to lower the carbs/calories.
- You can also leave out the garlic, onion or mustard powders if you don’t have it.
